Synopsis

10 Kilos
of Cocaine

Inspired by a best-selling true story by Sharon Yitzhaky. Sharon went to Bolivia with a young man she barely knew. She was framed and accused of smuggling ten kilos of cocaine across the border, and thrown into Bolivia's most atrocious women's prison. News stations picked up the story, and Sharon soon became the most "famous" woman convicted in the country. She carried on a tempestuous love affair with the head of the Bolivian drug cartel, held in the adjacent men's jail — a connection that made her the biggest dealer inside the walls. Sharon gathered a "family" around her: an adopted seven-year-old orphan girl and a soul sister she loved deeply. She got addicted to cocaine but fought back to recovery so she could look after her family. A lucky break came when the Pope declared a "Holy Year of Mercy" for the millennium, and Sharon used a loophole in the law to escape with her family to New York — before her 26th birthday. And it's all true.

Meet the Real Sharon

10 Kilos
of Cocaine
Sharon Yitzhaky
Co-writer & author

When she was just twenty, Sharon Yitzhaky traveled to Bolivia with a partner she barely knew — and soon found herself framed in a drug-smuggling scandal for attempting to move ten kilos of cocaine across the border.

Her sentence was harsh: five years in Mira Flores Prison, known as the toughest in the world. With no means and no grasp of the local language, she was thrown into a horrific reality and had to survive against all odds. 10 Kilos of Cocaine is the unbelievable true story of that life — the ties she cultivated with the head of the La Paz cartel and the judge on her own case, the addiction and recovery, and the soul sister she met in the harshest place on earth.

  • Fell in love in prison — a relationship with a transgender inmate she remains close to today, alongside a cartel member.
  • Got sober halfway through her sentence, asking for solitary confinement to get clean. She's still sober today, and hosts a recovery podcast.
  • Raised a family behind the walls — there were babies in the prison, and her own was three months old.
  • Runs a knitted swimwear line today, and speaks English and Spanish fluently.
